Heart Abnormalities - ASD (Atrial Septal Defect)
A Poodle with ASD is born with a heart in which the interatrial septum has not developed completely. In other words, this heart has a hole in the muscular wall, or septum, separating the upper chambers of the heart, the right atrium and left atrium.
Symptoms include difficulty breathing, weakness, exercise intolerance and, in some severe cases, congestive heart failure. ASD often presents as a heart murmur. Diagnosis of ASD can be confirmed with echocardiography.
Treatment depends on the nature of the defect. For extreme defects, surgery was once a risky and prohibitively expensive option. Now, new surgical advances in pediatric cardiology have been used successfully, most notably in Standard Poodles.
Dr. Sonya Gordon, the veterinary cardiologist who leads Texas A&M’s research into ASD, has stated that it is a “relatively infrequently diagnosed canine congenital cardiac malformation, comprising less than 2% of reported defects.” Her data suggest that Standard Poodles “should be considered at risk for ASD.”
Although a genetic component is clear, there has not been enough study to date to definitively determine ASD’s mode of inheritance. However, Dr. Gordon shared these findings with the attendees of the ACVIM (American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine) Forum 2006: “Initial evaluation of pedigree data has eliminated an X-linked recessive mode of inheritance as two affected females were able to produce unaffected male dogs. An autosomal dominant pattern appears to be most likely because the trait appears in each generation; however, evaluation of additional dogs is needed to confirm this.”
